Over four hundred people take on the Accuro Jersey Triathlon Virtual Challenge!

17 August 2020

Earlier this year, the organisers of the Accuro Jersey Triathlon took the difficult, but necessary decision, to cancel the annual triathlon event in 2020 due to COVID-19. Determined to showcase the triathlon in Jersey in 2020, within a difficult environment, organisers decided to launch the Accuro Jersey Triathlon ‘Virtual Challenge’.

The Virtual Challenge allowed participants to take on the three disciplines of triathlon (swim, bike and run) in their own location and in their own time, over a three-week period commencing on 1st July and finishing on the 19th July, thus ensuring that physical distancing was maintained throughout.

In total, over four hundred people participated in the Virtual Triathlon Challenge and the event welcomed people of all abilities and ages from eight to sixty six years. The approachable and non-competitive event format allowed organisers to welcome many new people to the sport of triathlon and also to welcome many people from overseas to participate in the event.  Organisers say that they have had people participate from countries such as Brazil, Canada, France, Mauritius, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Jersey and Guernsey.

Andrew Thomas, Managing Director of 3D Events and organiser of the Accuro Jersey Triathlon says; “We are absolutely delighted with the level of participation in Virtual Challenge, and thank everyone who took on the challenge and supported our fundraising efforts. With the support of our event partners, Accuro and The Beach, we set out to provide a showcase for triathlon sport during the lockdown period, and to provide a focal point for all the people who have been training hard though the period but could not yet race. We have witnessed such tremendous community spirit throughout the virtual challenge and have welcomed many new people to the sport, who we hope will join us for next year’s live event.”

Fundraising has been central to the Virtual Challenge and with the support of the participants the event has now raised over £5,000 for the event’s two official charities; Brightly, Alzheimer’s Jersey and the event’s benefitting entity, The Oscar MacLean Foundation.

The three-week challenge ended on Sunday 19th July with an exciting virtual bike race as part of the Accuro Jersey Triathlon Inter-Insular Cup. Jersey and Guernsey’s fastest qualifying athletes went head to head (from their own respective Islands) in a series of age grouped Zwift bike races, in order to place in the top three of each race and score valuable points for their Island.  The Inter-Insular Cup went to the final race, where Guernsey’s Josh Lewis took the win, ahead of Jersey’s Tom Atkinson. Guernsey ultimately secured the cup with a 19 points to 16 points win over Jersey.

Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Accuro Trust Jersey said:

“We are thrilled by the outcome of this year’s event. Aside from the fact that it has extended well beyond the borders of Jersey with it being a virtual challenge, it reached far deeper into communities. It has done so by enabling people who were intrigued by triathlons but may have been intimidated by starting with a mass participation event to use this version as a test of their ability. The feedback that has followed has been incredible and we hope that this has given these new triathletes the impetus to continue with the sport. Most importantly the event has raised well needed funding for important local charities. Congratulations to Guernsey on their impressive win in the hotly contested inter-insular cup. Our thanks goes to 3D Events and The Beach for all their hard work in turning this concept into a phenomenal success.”

The Accuro Jersey Triathlon 2021 is scheduled to take place on Sunday 11th July 2021 and registration is now open at jersey-triathlon.com.
